National PTA and Jamba Juice Join Forces to Raise $1 Million for Schools and PTAs Nationwide

National PTA and Jamba Juice Host San Francisco Event Honoring 45 Schools for Outstanding Achievement in Supporting Healthy Lifestyles

Jamba Juice Helps National PTA Recognize More Schools Than Ever Before for Programs
That Improve Student Health

SAN FRANCISCO (November 9, 2009) –National PTA and Jamba Juice are honoring 45 PTA schools from across the nation today for their innovative efforts in improving the health and academic success of their children.  Hosted by the Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila in San Francisco – one of this year’s honorees – the event is part of National PTA’s Healthy Lifestyles Month and highlights the great impact that parents and teachers can have in improving their children’s health.  All of the winning schools will receive up to a $1,000 grant in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
 
As part of a new, three year partnership with Jamba Juice, National PTA was able to double the number of grants it usually provides, allowing it to better recognize the great work of the nation’s top performing PTAs.  The 45 grants will serve over 28,000 students in 23 states. By honoring these phenomenal grass-roots efforts, National PTA and Jamba Juice hope to inspire more parents to get involved in their children’s schools.  Not only do the tireless efforts of the families and teachers at the winning schools represent some of the best thinking in parent-teacher activism, they offer an excellent template for other parents looking to make better lifestyle choices for their children and communities.

“With childhood obesity on the rise and with 16 percent of US children considered to be obese, we feel it is important to acknowledge parent efforts in striving toward implementing new initiatives in schools that will teach children how to develop healthy eating habits in order for them to have a chance of leading a healthy and successful future,” said Charles J. “Chuck” Saylors, National PTA President.  “PTAs are looking for innovative solutions to address the nation’s growing obesity issue by encouraging increased physical activity and teaching children and families about proper nutrition. Jamba’s mission to inspire and simplify healthy living supports National PTA’s goal of improving our children’s health and wellness.”

“Each of this year’s winning PTA schools has shown creativity in designing initiatives that support the health of their students and Jamba is honored to be able to recognize them for their stellar work,” said James D. PTAs from across the country submitted proposals describing different activities they have planned to help families increase their physical activity and learn to eat healthier through school gardens, cooking demonstrations, hosting walkathons, health fairs and family fit nights. The 45 selected PTA’s will receive cash grants to support PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month activities they have planned.  In addition these grants will also help them to promote health and wellness and parent involvement in their schools; emphasize the link between involvement and student achievement; and further PTA’s mission.

Today, Jamba Juice—with help from the Jamba Juice Jambassador, Bananaman—and National PTA have come together to celebrate Healthy Lifestyles Month by announcing all of the award recipients in a fun-filled, fruitful fashion at the Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila, a local PTA winning school in San Francisco.
